2
Q

Explain how molten and dissolved ionic compounds are able to conduct electricity

A

When an ionic compounds is dissolved the ions separate and are able to move in the solution
The means that the compound will conduct electricity
When an ionic compound melts, the ions are able to move, so electricity is able to be conducted

Q

Describe the structure and properties of metals

A

Have a giant structure of positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons
Metallic bonding is the electrostatic attraction between the nuclei of the positive ions and the electrons

Metals are good conductors of electricity as their delocalised electrons are able to move through the structure
They are good conductors of heat as the movement of electrons causes quick transferring of energy

Metals are also malleable as the layers of ions can slide over each other, therefore they can be hammered or rolled into flat sheets
