Electricity Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is Gradient?
The difference in concentration of something.
What is current?
Continuous flow of electrons measured in amps.
What is voltage?
The difference in electrical circuit measured in volts also called potential difference.
What is resistance?
Opposition to the flow of the current measured in ohms.
What is Ohm’s law?
V=I•R
- V= voltage
- I= current
- R= resistance
What are the three types of circuits?
- Parallel
- Series
- Complex
What is a series circuit?
- A circuit with only one continuous path for electricity to travel
- Formula: Rt=R1+R2+R3+R4……
What is a parallel circuit?
- A circuit with multiple paths for electricity to travel.
- Formula: 1/((1/R1)+(1/R2)+(1/R3)….)
How does the diameter of a wire affect the resistance?
As the wire diameter increases the resistance decreases.
How does the length of the wire affect the resistance?
As the length of the wire increases resistance increases.
How does the temperature of wire affect the resistance?
As the temperature increases resistance increases.
What are the rules for complex circuits?
- In a series circuit the current is constant.
2. In a parallel circuit voltage is constant
What is a complex circuit?
Circuit that combines parallel and series circuits into one circuit.
What is electricity?
The flow of electrons from place to place.
Who is Luigi Galvani?
A scientist who is dissecting a frog and whenever he touched his brass hook to his iron table the salty frog juice😷 caused electrical spark.
Who is Alessandro Volta?
- A scientist who determined that Galvani’s spark was called caused by the two metals touching while the salty frog juices were there thus, causing an electrical spark
- he took, salty paper, and silver and attached wire to each end and was able to produce an electric current.
What was the first batteries?
The voltage piles created by Alessandro Volta.
What is an electrode?
A piece of metal sitting on an electrolyte.
What are the three parts of an electrochemical cell?
The electrode, electrolytes, and terminal.
What is an electrolyte?
A substance that is liquid or paste that conducts an electric current.
What is a terminal?
The part of an electrode that sticks out of the electrolyte.
What is a battery?
A combination of two or more electrochemical cells.
What are the two types of electrochemical cells and what are they like?
- Wet Cell
- Electrolyte is a liquid
- Dry Cell
- Electrolyte is a paste
