Electricity Flashcards
(32 cards)
What current is mains supply?
Alternating current
What current is battery supply?
Direct current
What is the voltage of the UK mains supply?
230 volts
What is the frequency of the UK mains supply?
50 Hz
What is a cathode ray oscilloscope?
A voltmeter
What happens if you plug a DC supply into a CRO?
The trace is a straight line.
What does the vertical height of the AC trace show?
The input voltage.
How can you tell what the voltage is from a DC trace?
The distance from the trace to the centre line.
What is the formula for frequency?
Frequency = 1 / Time period Hz = 1 / s
What are the nine electrical hazards?
- Long cables
- Frayed cables
- Cables touching hot or wet things
- Water near sockets
- Things in sockets
- Damaged plugs
- Too many plugs
- Light with bulb
- Appliance without cover
What do three-core cables have inside?
Three wires, each with a copper core and plastic coating.
What is the brown wire?
Live wire, alternates between high +ve and -ve voltage.
What is the blue wire?
Neutral wire, 0V all the time.
What is the green and yellow wire?
Earth wire, protects wiring for safety.
What are the wire safety features?
- Connected to correct pin, firmly screwed in
- No bare wires
- Cable grip tightly fastened
What is the significance of thicker cables having less resistance?
They carry more current.
Why are the metal parts of plugs made of copper or brass?
Good conductors
Which parts of the plug are made of rubber or plastic?
Case, cable grip and cable insulation because of insulation and flexibility.
How do fuses prevent electrical overloads?
- Surge in current melts fuse
- Live supply cut off
- Circuit broken
What causes a fault?
Live wire touches metal case.
How should fuses be rated?
Just above the normal operating current.
Why does fuse rating needed for tables usually increase with cable thickness?
Larger currents need thicker cables.
What does a double insulated appliance mean?
Plastic casing and no metal parts showing.
What do two-core cables carry?
Live and neutral wires.
