Electricity and Magentism Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is it called when a circuit that connects several objects one after another so that the current flows in a single path.
A series circuit
What is it called when a circuit connects several objects in a way that the current for each object has its own path.
A parallel circuit
What is resistance?
The amount a material opposes the flow of electricity and changes electric current into heat energy.
What is a conductor?
A material through which electric current passes easily
What is an insulator?
A material through which electric current does NOT pass
Name a conductor
Wire, anything metal.
Name an insulator.
rubber, plastic, cork, etc
What is a magnet?
Anything that will attract of pull iron, steel and other metals to it.
What is a magnetic field?
The space around a magnet where magnetism acts.
What is magnetism?
The force around a magnet.
What is a pole?
A place on a magnet where magnetism is strongest
What is a compass?
A small magnet that can turn freely
Which happens when opposite poles of a magnet are placed side by side? (North and south or south and north)
They attract
What happens when like poles of s magnet are placed side by side? (north and north or south and south)
They repel.
What is a generator?
A machine that uses an energy source and a magnet to make electricty
What type of circuits are in homes?
Parallel. Be prepared to explain why (so when the bulb in your lamp goes out, you can still use your hairdryer, etc)
What causes static electricity?
The transfer of electrons. A negatively charged item will be attracted to a positively charged one.
