Electricity Basics Flashcards
(25 cards)
Define a cell
A cell is a device that changes potential energy into kinetic energy
What is an electrolyte?
An electrolyte is a liquid which conducts electrical current
What is voltage?
It is the amount of potential energy provided by a cell
How is a volt meter connected to a circuit?
In parallel
What is a battery?
Two or more cells that are connected
What are the materials needed to make a zinc-copper cell?
- Zinc electrode
- Copper electrode
- Connecting wire
- Electrolyte with Zn2+ ions
- Electrolyte with Cu2+ ions
- Salt bridge
What is resistance?
The ability to oppose the flow of charge
What is current?
The movement of charge
What is a parallel circuit?
A circuit with more than one pathway for the current to flow
What is a series circuit?
A circuit with only one pathway for the current to flow
What is the unit used for current?
Ampere (A)
What is the symbol used for current in equations?
I
What is potential difference?
The amount of energy per charge
What is the unit for Volts/potential difference?
V
What is the equation of voltage?
Volts = Joules per coulomb of charge
What is the unit for resistance?
ohm (Ω)
What is the symbol used for resistance in equations?
R
What is power?
The rate at which electrical work is done
What is the unit for power?
Watt (W)
What is the equation for a watt?
Watt = Joules/second
How do you figure out resistance?
Voltage divided by Current
How do you figure out current?
Voltage divided by resistance
How do you figure out voltage?
Current times resistance
What is a stepped tariff?
When the amount charged increases the more units you use
E.G: 0-500 units is R1 per unit and 501-1000 units is R2 per unit
