Electricity I Final Flashcards
(48 cards)
What is the definition of brightness?
The perceived amount of light reflecting from an object
What does a grounding conductor do?
A conductor that does not normally carry current, except during a fault or short circuit
What is an Arc Tube in an HID lamp?
The light-producting element of an HID lamp
What is the definition of filament?
A conductor with a resistance high enough to cause the conductor to heat
What is a fluorescent lamp and how does it work?
A low-pressure discharge lamp in which ionization of mercury vapor transforms ultraviolet energy generated by the discharge into light
What is the definition of a substation?
An assemblage of equipment installed for switching, changing, or regulating the voltage of electricity
What is a motion sensor and how does it work?
An infrared sending device that detects the movement of a temperature variance and automatically switches when the movement is detected
What is a GFCI and how does it work?
An electrical device which protects personnel by detecting ground faults and quickly disconnecting power from the circuit
What is an Isolated Ground Receptable and how does it work?
An electrical receptacle that minimizes electrical noise by providing a separate grounding path for each receptacle
What is a Four-way Switch and how does it work?
Double-pole, Double-throw switch that changes the electrical connections inside the switch from straight to diagonal “X” pattern
What is the defintion of recepticle?
A device used to connect equipment with a cord and plug to an electrical system
What is a two-way switch and how does it work?
A single-pole, single-throw switch
What is the definition of a residential system and what does it involve?
Primarily include lamp control, general-purpose receptalce, and special-purpose receptable circuits, lower voltage 240V service. Heaters, lights, oven, ect.
What is a thermocouple and how does it work?
A device that produces electricity when two different metals (like iron and constantan) that are joined together are heated
What is the definition of voltage surge?
A higher than normal boltage that temporarily exists on one or more power lines
What is the defintition of voltage dip?
A momentary low voltage
What is a voltage stabilitzer and why is it used?
A device that provides precise voltage regulation to protect equipment from voltage dips and surges
What does an Output Device do?
A device that is used to produce work, light, heat, sound, or display information
What is the definition of Hot Resistance?
The actual (true) resistance of a component when operating current is passing through the device
What is the stator in an AC motor?
The stationary part of an AC motor
What is Breakdown Torque?
The maximum torque a motor can produce without an abrupt reduction in motor speed
What is the definition of an electric motor?
A rotating output device that converts electrical power into a rotating, mechanical force
How is a Delta Connection configured?
A transformer connection that has each transformer coil connectred end-to-end to form a closed loop
How is a Wye Connection configured?
A transformer connection that has one end of each transformer coil connectrd together
