Electricity in the Home Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is the uk’s mains supplys frequency and voltage?
230 V
at 50 Hz
name something that has ac, and smth thathas dc
-uk mains
- cells/batteries
What do each of the wires in cables have? (holistically)
core of copper, coloured plastic coating; the colour of the insulation shows its purpose, colours are same for EVERY appliance
What are the names of the 3 wire
live wire
neutral wire
earth wire
What colour is the live wire?
brown
What colour is the neutral wire
blue
what colour is the earth wire
green and yellow
What does the live wire do? What is its pd?
-provides the alternating potential difference from the mains supply
- 230V
What does the neutral wire do? Voltage?
-completes the circuit, current flows through the llive wire and back through the neutral wire
-OV
What does the Earth wire do? Voltage?
-protectnig the wiring and for safety - it stops the appliance casing from becoming live
-only carries a current if there is a fault
-0V
Explain the dangers of the live wire
electric shock:
- - body is at 0V,
- - if it touches the live wire, a large pd is produced across ur body and a current flows through u
- - causes a large electric shock that can kill u
- - even if the plug socket/light switch is turned off, there is still a pd iin the live wire which, if makes contaxt with ur body, will provide a link between the supply and the eatyh so a current would still flow through you
Fire:
- - any connectio between live and earth can be dangerous
- - if the link creates a low resistane path to earth, a huge current will flow, resulting in a fire
