Electricity in the home Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are the two types of electricity supplies?
AC and DC (alternating and direct)
Is mains supply AC or DC?
AC
Is battery supply AC or DC?
DC
What happens to the current in AC supplies?
The current is constantly changing direction
How many volts is the UK mains supply?
230V
What is the frequency of the AC main supply?
50Hz
What happens to current DC supplies?
The current is always flowing in the same direction
How many wires do most cables have?
3
What are the three wires in a plug?
Neutral wire, live wire, and earth wire
What is the colour of the live wire?
Brown
What is the colour of the neutral wire?
Blue
What is the colour of the earth wire?
Green and yellow
What is the material in the core of the wire?
Copper
What does the live wire do?
The live wire provides the alternating potential difference at about 250 V from the main supply
What does the Earth wire do?
The Earth wire is for protecting the wiring and for safety. It stops the appliance casing from becoming live. It doesn’t usually carry a current, only when there’s a fault. It’s at 0V
What does the neutral wire do?
The neutral wire completes the circuit and carries away current, electricity normally flows in through the live wire and out through the neutral wire. It is around 0V.
What wire will give you an electric shock if you touch it?
The live wire
What wire does electricity flow into?
Live
What wire does electricity flow out of?
Neutral
