Define electrode potential
The electrode potential of an element is the potential difference between an aqueous solution of its ions and the element when it is in equilibrium with that solution.
What does the electrode potential of the metal depends on?
It depends on the nature of the metal, concentration of the ions, temperature and pressure.
What is the function it the salt bridge?
- It is to allow the flow of charged ions to maintain electrical neutrality.
- prevent mixing of the different solutions by diffusion.
Define the standard electrode (Redox) potential.
The standard electrode potential of a half cell is the potential difference between the electrode half cell and the standard hydrogen electrode (taken as 0.00V) measured under standard conditions.
Define standard cell potential.
The standard cell potential is the maximum potential difference between 2 electrodes of an electrochemical cell measured under standard conditions.
