Electrolysis Flashcards
Rules for electroylsis in aqueous solutions?
If the metal present is more reactive then hydrogen, hydrogen will be displaced
If at the anode if a halide is not present it will discharge the OH- ions
the OH ions will become oxygen and water
What do acids and alkali’s produce in aqueous solutions?
Acids produce hydrogen ions, alkali’s produce hydroxide ions
OH-
what is a strong acid and weak acid?
strong acid is completely ionised in water, weak acid will only partially ionise
What is electroylsis?
The passing of an electric current through ionic substances that are molten or in solution to break them down into elements, they either become oxidised or reduce to create them
What is an electrolyte
The liquid solution which conducts electricity
what is a cathode and what is an anode?
Cathode = negative
anode = positiv
what occurs at the cathode and what occurs at the anode?
Cathode is reduction
anode is oxidisation
In aqueous solutions which element is discharged at the cathode oxygen is produced at the anode unless what?
Unless halide ions are present at the anode
How is aluminium manufactured
Aluminium made through the electrolysis of aluminum oxide + cryolite
