Electrolysis Flashcards

1
Q

Process of electrolysis?

A

When ionic substance is melted or dissolved, ions are free to move.
A current is passed through it breaking the solution down into elements.
The positively charged ions move to negative electrode vice versa

Q

Electrolysis of molten ionic compounds?

A

Simple ionic compounds elctrolysed in molten state using inert electrodes, metal is produced at cathode and non metal is produced at anode

Q

Electrolysis of aqueous solutions

A

Ions discharged when an aqueous solution is electolysed using inert electrodes depend on the relative reactivity of elements involved.
Cathode produces hydrogen unless metal is less reactive that hydrogen.
Positive electrode OH- unless halide present
