Electrolysis Flashcards
Revision for end of topic Electrolysis Test (37 cards)
What is Electrolysis?
The process in which an electrolyte is broken down by electricity; not a physical separation method.
What is an Electrolyte?
An ionic compound that is either molten or dissolved this allows the ions to move within the liquid.
What is the POSITIVELY charged electrode called?
Anode
What is the NEGATIVELY charged electrode called?
Cathode
What are the product rules at the ANODE?
- Oxygen is produced unless a halide ion is present.
- If one of the halide ions are present (Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, Fluorine) then that element is formed.
What are the product rules at the CATHODE?
- Either hydrogen or a metal is produced here
- Metal is produced at the Cathode if it is less reactive than hydrogen (Copper, Silver, Gold and Platinum)
- Hydrogen gas is produced at the Cathode if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen.
What charge of ion does the Cathode attract?
Positive
What charge of ion does the Anode attract?
Negative
What do ions do when they reach an electrode?
They lose or gain electrons.
What charge do elements on the left of the P.T. have?
Positive
What charge do the elements on the right of the P.T. have?
Negative
What are the five possible elements that can be formed at the Cathode?
Hydrogen, Copper, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
What are the five possible elements that can be formed at the Anode?
Oxygen, Chlorine, Bromine, Fluorine and Iodine.
In an aqueous solution what ion is positively charged? What electrode does it go to and what does it form there?
Hydrogen ions (H+) they go to the cathode where they form Hydrogen gas.
In an aqueous solution what ion is negatively charged? What electrode does it go to and what does it form there?
Hydroxide ions (OH-) they go to the anode where they form Oxygen gas.
What is the ratio of volume of hydrogen to oxygen being released?
2:1
What product is formed at the cathode during the electrolysis of Sodium Chloride solution?
- Hydrogen because sodium is more reactive than hydrogen
What product is formed at he cathode during the electrolysis of Copper Chloride solution?
- Copper because it is less reactive that hydrogen
What is produced at the anode during the electrolysis of Sodium Sulphate solution?
Oxygen because there is no halide ion present and Sulphate is a hydroxide ion.
What is ALWAYS produced at the anode? (think 2)
A molecule is formed e.g. O2 or I2.
What is used to show the reaction that takes place at the electrodes?
Half-Equations
What are the rules of half-equations?
- The number of atoms of each element must be the same on both sides
- Reactions at the cathode have electrons as part of the reactants (on the left of the arrow)
- Reactions at the anode have electrons as part of the product (on the right side of the arrow)
At which electrode does reduction take place?
Cathode
At which electrode does oxidation take place?
Anode
