Electromagnetic Spectrum Flashcards
(8 cards)
The electromagnetic spectrum can be divided into how many regions?
Seven Regions
- radio wave
- microwave
- infrared light
- visible light
- ultraviolet light
- x-ray
- gamma ray
These electromagnetic waves have the longest wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum. They are used for communication, broadcasting, and radar.
Radio Waves
These electromagnetic waves are shorter than radio waves but still long compared to visible light. They are absorbed by water molecules, making them ideal for heating.
Microwaves
________ radiation is sometimes called “heat radiation” because it is felt as heat and is emitted by warm objects. It lies just below visible light in the spectrum.
Infrared
These elctromagnetic waves are in the range in the spectrum that can only be seen by the human eye.
Visible Light
Each color has different wavelengths. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet
These electromagnetic waves have higher energy than visible light. It comes from the sun and is responsible for causing sunburns.
Ultraviolet
These electromagnetic waves are high-energy waves that can penetrate (pass) through soft tissue but are absorbed by solid materials like bones.
X-rays
These elelectro magnetic waves have the highest frequencies (energy) of all regions in the spectrum. They are produced during nuclear reactions and can be very harmful.
Gamma Rays
