Electronegativity Flashcards
(5 cards)
Electronegativity
Measure of tendency of an atom to attracts a bonding pair or e- of a covalent bond.
/ how closely an atom tends to hog the e- in a bond,
The greater the EN, the more it attracts e-.
sort of like a spectrum:
covalent ———– ionic (-> increased EN diff.)
Affected by:
Atomic charge
Distance from nucleous
Electron shielding
Permanent Dipole
Every atom of 2 atoms have the different charges => polar covalent bonds => non-
symmetrical molecule => a polar molecule
occurs when two atoms in a molecule have substantially different electronegativity : One atom attracts electrons more than another, becoming more negative, while the other atom becomes more positive. A molecule with a permanent dipole moment is called a polar molecule.
Polar molecule
a molecule that is differently charged in different regions => polar covalent bonds
Polar covalent bond
A bond between atoms where the e- are not shared equally (spend more time at one atom)
