Electrostatics Flashcards

How do you charge by friction
When 2 materials are rubbed together electrons are transferred from one materials to another . One will have a negative charge and one will have a positive charge
How do you show that there are two types of charge
- Take 2 rods of different materials
- Charge up one by rubbing with a duster
- Suspend it in a stirrup
- Charge the second rod
- Hold it near the suspended one to see the force between the two rods
- Repeat using two similar rods
Like forces repel
Different forces attract
How do you charge by induction
- Charge a balloon by friction
- As ballon is brought towards the wall electrons in the wall are repelled
- The surface of the wall is left with an overall positive charge
- The balloon is now attracted to the wall
How is a comb attracted to dust particles
- Comb when brushed through hair becomes charged
- Electrons move to the top of the particles as they are attracted
- The bottom of the particle is left positively charged
- The top iscloser to the comb so the dust is attracted to the comb
Describe a possible danger of fuelling an electrically charged aircraft
A charge building up and when a earthed a spark could occur which could lead to an explosion
Explain the uses of a safety wire
Charges can flow through the wire which discharges any build up of charge
The droplets of paint are all negatively charged, and explain why this is an advantage
- The paint droplets regeln
- The paint will spread out
- Attracted to object
- Paint reaches back of object
How could you show that the plastic rod gain charge
See if rod is attracted to paper pieces and lift them up
