Q

Kr

17
Q

Simple distillation

A

Separate liquid from solution
Basically evaporation but gas goes into tubes and cooled back down into a liquid leaving the distillate as water and the salt is left in the original container

18
Q

Separating funnel

A

Water and oil (ex) put in funnel, slowly release until the line of divide. Oil is left on top water is in the beaker below

19
Q

Exothermic

A

Gives of heat

20
Q

Endothermic

A

Uses heat energy

21
Q

Solute

A

A substance dissolved in a solution
Ex: salt in water

22
Q

Solvent

A

Substance that dissolves a solute
Ex: water

23
Q

Residue

A

Material remaining after evaporation or distilling

24
Q

Filtrate

A

Material that has passed through a filter
Ex: most of the time water

25
Precipitate
Formation of a solid in a solution
26
Absolute error
l experimental - accepted l = g/ml
27
% error
l experimental - accepted l ______________________________ x 100 = % Accepted
28
Physical property
Can be observed without changing identity of a substance
29
Chemical property
Describes ability of substance to undergo changes in identity Ex: flammability, reactivity, toxicity, possible chemical bonds
30
Physical change
Changes form of substance without changing identify Chemical properties remain the same
31
Chemical change
Changes identity of substance Products have different properties
32
Physical change main observations
Change in state/ phase Change in size Change in shape
33
Indications of chemical change
Production of light Production of heat Production of gas (bubbles) Color change * Change in odor Formation of a precipitate Gets cold without coolant Gives of smoke Change in texture * Change in appearance *
34
Observation
Anything you know based off of senses
35
Inference
An educated guess based off of senses
36
Alloy
Homogenous mix of metals
37
Volume vs mass vs density calculation
Mass Density Volume
38
Chromatography
Coloring agents in food or inks Ink spread on filter paper. Paper placed in solvent. Attracts chemicals on its way up
