Elements Flashcards
(5 cards)
Describe the meaning of an element.
An element is a chemical consisting of only atoms with the same atomic number.
How are atoms commonly represented?
Using symbols such as Mg, Pb, Fe which are seen on the periodic table.
What are isotopes?
They are different forms of the same element but have different amounts of neutrons and therefore a different mass number.
Why is Relative Atomic Mass used instead of mass number?
An element can exist in many different isotopes of different mass numbers, so RAM is used to describe the element in general or as a whole.
What is the formula used to work out Relative Atomic Mass?
= sum of (isotope abundance x isotope mass number)
/sum of abundances of all the isotopes.
