Elements and compounds Flashcards
(15 cards)
atomic weight
the average weight of an element
What is a pure substance?
Substances that contain only 1 type of element or compound.
periodic table
a table of the chemical elements
Particle
Particle is a broad term which can include matter of different sizes: from a single atom, to a piece of pollen or a grain of sand
Matter
Matter can exist as a pure substance or as mixtures of pure substances. .
periods

What is the difference between a molecular element and a molecular compound?
Molecular elements are only 1 type of non-metal elements chemically bonded together whereas, molecular compounds 2 or more of non-metal elements chemically bonded together.
groups
columns on the periodic table going horizontal
Element
An element is a pure substance that contains just one type of atom.
What is a mixture?
A mixture contains more than one type of element or molecule in the same substance, but the different types of components are not chemically bonded together.
What are the 3 types of mixtures?
A solution, (solute is dissolved in a solvent, forming a homogeneous mixture that doesn’t separate.) A suspension, (Cloudy liquid mixtures with insoluble particles that will settle to the bottom when left.) And a colloid, (A cloudy-looking mixture, usually because insoluble particles stay suspended throughout the solvent.)
Molecule
When two or more non-metal atoms are joined by chemical bonds
Diatomic Molecule
When two non-metal atoms are joined together
Triatomic
when three non-metal atoms are joined together
Lattice
Sometimes a large quantity of atoms in elements are bonded together in a three-dimensional solid
