What are the 7 elements of art?
Color, shape, space, texture, line, form and value.
What are the 3 characteristics of color?
Hue, intensity and value.
Intensity
How bright or dull a color is
Value
How light or dark the color is
Primary colors
Red, yellow and blue.
Secondary
Colors made by mixing primary colors:
Red+yellow = orange
Blue + red= violet
Yellow + blue= green
Tertiary
Are colors between the primary colors on the wheel.
Complementary colors
Colors opposite each other on the wheel
Texture
How something feels. Can be real or implied.
Shape
Can be geometric or organic.
Line
Defines a shape. It is the path between two points.
Space
Positive (subject) or negative (space that surrounds the subject)
Contrast
The difference in value or the difference between a lightness and darkness

Balance, contrast, movement, emphasis, pattern and unity
Balance
How visual weight is distributed. Can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
Symmetrical
Same weight both sides
Asymmetrical
Different weight on one side. It is more visually interesting
Contrast
When elements are used to create interesting differences. Ie warm/cool colors
Movement
Using elements to move the viewers eye around the piece.
Emphasis
Creates a focal point.
Pattern
Repeating elements in the same order
Rhythm
Repeats elements without a specific order
Unity
Harmony in a piece when elements work together
