Q

Simple distillation

A

The process of removing a solvent from a mixture by heating the mixture up and separating it when the solvent forms a vapour. The vapour is then cooled in a condenser to form a liquid again.

Q

Fractional distillation

A

The process of separating a mixture of substances with different boiling points. The mixture is heated to the boiling point of one substance which rises up as a vapour and is subsequently cooled into a liquid by the condenser.

Q

Crystallisation

A

The process of separating a dissolved solid from a liquid by heating it up and creating a vapour. Different to distillation because you lose the liquid.

Q

Paper chromatography

A

The process of separating a mixture by placing a solvent at the bottom of a filter paper. Place a dot of the mixture on the filter paper on a pencil line. As the solvent soaks the paper in an upward motion, the mixture dot is separated into two pure substance dots on the same vertical line.

13
Q

Reading a chromatogram

A

When the mixture dot has been separated, if one of the pure substance dots has moved further up the line, it is more soluble. The initial dot mixture has been separated into substances of different solubilities.

Q

Charges of compound ions

A

All ions except NH4 have negative charges relative to their combining power (NH4 is positive to its combining power)
