Flashcards in Elements , Mixtures and Compounds - Chemical Reactions Deck (15):
1

What is an element?

Elements are made up of only ONE kind of atom.

2

What is a compound?

Compounds are where 2 or more DIFFERENT atoms join together. The atoms must be different!

3

What is a mixture?

Mixtures are where two or more different atoms are in the same space but aren't chemically bonded. It can contain any combination of elements or compounds.

4

What is an atom?

Atoms are the simplest particles of matter. They are a small particle from which all substances are made.

5

What is a molecule?

Molecules are made when 2 or more atoms join together. The atoms in a molecule can be the same or different.

6

Name 5 things that react in a chemical reactions?

Any of these or more :

- Bath bombs
- Fire
- Explosion
- Coke + mentos
- Fuel

7

Magnesium + Oxygen = ?
What is the reaction?

Magnesium Oxide
Its reaction is a bright white light.

8

Magnesium + Sulphuric acid = ?
What is the reaction?

Magnesium Sulfate + Hydrogen
Its reaction is a squeaky pop when a flame is introduces and bubbles produces fizzing.

9

Lead nitrate + Potassium iodine = ?
What is the reaction?

Lead iodine + Potassium nitrate
Its reaction is change of colour.

10

Copper sulfate + Sodium hydroxide = ?
What is the reaction?

Copper hydroxide + Sodium sulfate
Its reaction is that a white solid formed.

11

Name the 5 signs of chemical reaction.

- Light / Sound produced / Sparks / Flames
- Colour change
- Solid formed
- Efferservance (Fizzing)
- Temperature change

12

What is a chemical reaction?

A chemical reaction always form one or more new substances.

13

When do you use 'ate' at the end of a chemical reaction?

Solve these sequences :
a) Zinc + sulfur + oxygen = ?
b) Iron + sulfur + oxygen = ?
c) Copper sulfate + Sodium hydroxide = ?

If a compound contains 2 or more elements in addition to oxygen, then the ending of the name of 1 element is changed to 'ate'.

a) Zinc sulfate
b) Iron sulfate
c) Copper hydroxide + Sodium sulfate

14

When do you use 'ide' at the end of a chemical reaction?

If a compound contains 2 or more elements in addition to not having oxygen, then the ending of the name of 1 element is changed to 'ide'.

15

Write a word sequence for the following.

What elements are in :
a) Lead nitrate
b) Magnesium Oxide
c) Mercury Oxide

a) Lead + nitrogen + oxygen

b) Magnesium + oxygen

c) Mercury + oxygen
