Elements of design Flashcards
(15 cards)
Horizantal Line
Represents stability, repose, or the plane which we stand or move. Breaks the plane into similar components.
Vertical line
Can express a state of equilibrium with the force of gravity. Can be seen as rising or falling.
Diagonal line
Deviations from the horizantal and vertical, can be rising and falling but either case, implies movement and visually active. Keeps structures/objects interesting.
Curved line
Represents movement defelctined by lateral spaces. More feminine.
Pictorial (Space)
Organization of elements on no specific material substance through a picture. Can be active and full of movement.
Illusionistic (space)
Specific traits can diminish a scale in a space.
Actual (space)
Design elements arranged to create material substance
Natural (shape)
Natural shapes represent the images and froms ofour natural world
Nonobjective (shape)
This makes no obvious reference to a specific object or particular object matter. It’s more abstract.
Geometric (shape)
Two dominant shpes; rectilinear and curvilinear, these two shapes dominate the built enviormentfor the architecture and interior design.
Tactile (texture)
This texture is real and can be felt by touch.
Visual (texture)
This texture is seen by the eye and may be illusory or real.
Structural pattern (texture)
A texture that results in intrinsic nature of a material and they way it is processed, fabricated, or assembled.
Color
An inherent visual property of all form. Can be subtle or distinct.
Unity and Variety through contrast
Organizing elements is a way to create a scheme by a variety of shapes, colors, and textures. Variety through contrast helps smaller shapes stand out.
