The series of conflicts and crisis in the story that lead to the climax

The turning point, the most intense moment either mentally or in action
Falling action
All of the action which follows the climax
Chronological Order
first establishes the setting and conflict, then follows the rising action through to a climax (the peak of the action and turning point), and concludes with a denouement (a wrapping up of loose ends).
Flashbacks
interruptions that writers do to insert past events, in order to provide background or context to the current events of a story. By using flashbacks, writers allow their readers to gain insight into a characterʼs motivations, and provide a background to a current conflict. Dream sequences and memories are methods used to present flashbacks.
In Media Res (in the middle of things)
when the story starts in the middle of the action without exposition.
Conflict
•The struggle between two opposing forces.

External conflict
•involves an outside source

Internal conflict
•goes on within the character

Protagonist
•The main character

•The character that the reader becomes emotionally involved with
Antagonist
•The character who goes up against the protagonist in the man versus man conflict.
•The villian
Dynamic Character
•A character who changes as a result of a conflict.
Static Character
A character that stays the same
Characterization
Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.Characterization is revealed through direct characterization and indirect characterization.
Direct Characterization
Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is.
Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.”
Indirect Characterization
Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character.
There are five different methods of indirect characterization: Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others towards the character, Actions, Looks
1st person narration
The narrator is a character in the story, referred to as I.
3rd person limited narration
The narrator reveals the thoughts of only one character, referring to that character as “he” or “she”
