Words describing pitch
Melody, Harmony, Contour (whether the melody jumps, leaps, ascending or descending notes) High, Low, Counter melody, small or large range,tonality (key of music)
Words describing texture
Monophonic, Polyphonic, Homophonic, Heterophonic, Layers, Thick, Thin
Monophonic
having a single melodic line without harmonies or counter melodies.
Polyphonic
the simultaneous combination of two or more tones or melodic lines
Heterophonic
multiple variants of a single melodic line heard simultaneously, the same melody slightly more decorated or changed.
Homophonic
Melody accompanied by chords
Words describing structure
Staggered entry, binary, strophic, cyclic, macro, micro, rondo form, ostinato ,coda, ternary form.
Binary form
a structure featuring two main sections, often labeled A and B, which are usually related and may be repeated. commonly AB or AABB
Rondo form
a structure that features a main theme or refrain (A) that alternates with contrasting sections e.g ABACABA
Strophic form
a simple musical structure where the same music is repeated for each verse or stanza of text. AAA etc
The only difference in sections is the lyrics
Ternary form
a three-part structure (A-B-A) where the first section (A) is presented, followed by a contrasting section (B), and then the return of the first section (A)
Dynamics and Expression
p,f,ff,mf,mp etc Crescendos and Decrescendos, Vibrato, Glissando,Pizzicato, Distortion, Plucked, Bowed, walking bass, chord blocks
Duration
ostinato, tempo, beat, syncopation, rhythm, crochet, minum, quaver, semiquaver
Performing media and timbre
Different instruments and how they sound. sweet bright, clear, electronic,brassy, artificial, dirty, majestic, resonant, muddy, dark
Theme
A longer section of a song, the tune that you remember
Motif
Short, repeated, makes up the theme, they can be changed but sound similar.
Cyclic form
A musical idea, like a theme or motif, is used or recalled in multiple movements or sections of a piece
Mainly in concertos, sonatas, and symphonies
