Q
Marriage issues
A
Initially assumed she would marry- probably a powerful European prince- so enhancing England’s status and producing an heir to guarantee the succession. The alternative- of marriage to a member of the English nobility- posed potential problems in terms of faction-fighting
While she remained without an heir her natural successor was Mary Queen of Scots. Fear of a Catholic inheritance was strong among Elizabeth’s Protestant nobility and Elizabeth’s death without a successor could lead to civil war.
