What is emergency contraception
Safe and effective means for preventing pregnancy following
Unprotected sexual intercourse

When should you consider EC
Always be considered if the female clients attend for STI screening and or tx
If a woman is nor using a regular form of contraception and had has unprotected sexual intercourse then she could be at risk of becoming pregnant
Depending on the time that has elapsed since she had sex and at which stage she Is in her cycle there are diff forms of EC which she may be able to use.
What are the 3 choices of EC
Non hormonal - IUD
Hormonal - Levongestrel - Levonelle
Ulipristal acetate 30mg (progestogen receptor modulator )
What is an IUD what does it do
Intrauterine device Most effective emergency contraception ‘Copper coil’ Fitted 120hrs after UPSI Up to day 19 of a 28/7 menstrual cycle It should,be the first option offered Makes the uterus toxic to sperm and ovum therefore inhibiting fertilisation Can be left in situ as an ongoing method as it’s failure rates are low
What is levongestrel and how does it work
Levonelle 1500mcg Morning after pill POEC licensed up to 72hrs post UPSI Delayed ovulation for 5-7 days after which time the speed in the tract will not be viable Sperm can last up to 7days
What is ulipristal acetate
Progesterone Receptor modulator
Licensed for the following UPSI or ,ethic failure 120hrs
Can delay or suppress ovulation
Efficacy not thought to decrease based in the length of time after intercourse it is administered
What should you always consider after emergency contraception
Ongoing contraception
Health promotion safer sex discussions
Pregnancy testing
Repeat STI testing
