What are the first steps to take when intervening on a burn patient?

A
  • Airway, Breathing, Circulation
  • remove clothing
  • wash off chemicals
  • covering burn w/ clean, dry sheet
  • small burns: apply cold/wet compress
  • large burns: do not use cold/wet compresses (can cause hypothermia)

What kind of burns should raise suspicion for child abuse?

A
  • shaped like object that could be used to burn
  • circular
  • “stocking and glove” distribution
  • areas usually protected from burns (buttocks, perineum, etc)
  • clear edges of burned area where splash marks would be expected

How are superficial burns classified?

A
  • AKA first degree
  • burn limited to epidermis
  • red, blances with pressure
  • dry
  • minor swelling, pain
  • resolves in 5-7 days
