Q

What should you do if the clutch light illuminates during flight?

A

If light comes on in a hover of in flight, and does not go out in 10 seconds: pull clutch circuit breaker and LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICAL.

If other indications of system drive failure, be prepared to enter an AUTOROTATION

Q

What should you do if the Alternator light illuminates during flight?

A

(indicates possible alt failure)

Turn off all nonessential electrical equipment and switch the ALT off and back on again after 1 second. If light stays on, LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICAL. (no power = no tach’s… very hazardous for flight)

Q

What should you do if the Starter light is illuminated?

A

(indicates starter is engaged)

If the light does not go out after you release the ignition switch (keys), immediately pull mixture off and turn battery switch off (red battery switch). Call maintenance cause that starter needs replaced….

Q

What does land immediately mean?

A

Land on the nearest clear area where safe normal landing can be performed. Be prepared to enter an autorotation during approach if required.

16
Q

What are the steps you should take with a power failure above 500ft AGL?

A

(enter autorotation)

  • Lower collective immediately, slight aft cyclic, right pedal
  • turn throttle to dentent and slightly up on collective to keep RPM at the bottom of the green.
  • Keep airspeed about 65Kias
  • select landing spot altitude permitting into the wind
  • A restart can be attempted at pilots discretion
  • At about 40ft AGL, begin cyclic flare
  • at about 8 - 10ft AGL, apply forward cyclic to level the ship and pull up on collective to cushion landing in an actual auto…
17
Q

What should you do if you have a power failure below 8ft?

A
  • Apply Right Pedal to prevent yawing
  • allow helicopter to settle
  • raise collective just before touchdown to cushion landing
18
Q

What is the air restart procedure?

A
  1. Mix - full rich
  2. Throttle closed, then cracked slightly
  3. Actuate starter with left hand (turn the key, say a prayer)

Do not attempt if engine malfunction is suspected or before a safe autorotation is established….

19
Q

What should you do if you loose tail rotor thrust in forward flight?

A

(indicated by a nose right yaw that cannot be corrected)

  1. Immediately enter an autorotation
  2. maintain at least 70 KIAS if practical
  3. Select a landing sight, roll throttle into detent and perform autorotation landing

If suitable landing sight is not available, the vertical stabilizers may permit limited controlled flight above 70 KIAS…

20
Q

What should you do if you lose tail rotor thrust in a hover?

A

(indicated by a nose right yaw which cannot be corrected)

  1. Immediately roll off throttle into detent and allow aircraft to settle.
  2. Raise collective just before touchdown to cushion landing
21
Q

What should you do if your headset fails during flight?

A

Land as soon as practical.

22
Q

What should you do if there is an engine fire during startup?

A
  1. Continue Cranking! (if engine starts, run at 50-60% RPM for a short time)
  2. Fuel mixture off (pull up on mixture knob)
  3. Fuel valve off
  4. Battery switch off
  • If time permits apply rotor break then exit the helicopter
23
Q

What should you do for an engine fire in flight?

A
  1. Enter Auto
  2. Cabin heat off
  3. Cabin Vent on (if time permits)
  4. If engine is running, perform normal landing. Then shut off fuel mixture and fuel valve
  5. if engine stops running, turn fuel valve off, and complete the auto
  6. battery switch off
  • if time permits apply rotor brake and exit helicopter
24
Q

What should you do if there is an electrical fire in flight?

A
  1. Turn off battery and alternator switches
  2. open cabin vents
  3. Land immediately
  4. fuel mixture and valve, off
  5. If time permits, apply rotor brake and exit the helicopter

(special note): CAUTION - low RPM warning system and governor are inoperative with battery and alternator switches both off…

25
What should you do if you have a tachometer failure in flight?
Use remaining tach to monitor RPM. If it is not clear what is malfunctioning, allow the governor to control the RPM and LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICAL
26
What should you do if the governor fails during flight?
Grip the throttle firmly to override governor, then shut it off and complete flight using manual throttle.
