Term Definition
grievance procedure
A formal process of internal dispute resolution by which employees may have their grievances addressed.
safety awareness campaign
Campaign that aims to raise workers’ awareness of current and potential hazards using posters’ publications’ film’ bulletins’ pamphlets’ newsletters’ and displays.
off-boarding
The process that takes place when an employee is leaving an organization.
compliance
The process by which an organization obeys or conforms to a rule’ standard’ law’ or regulation.
termination for cause
When an employee’s behavior’ given its seriousness and consequences’ creates a situation such that termination of the employment contract becomes so compelling that neither the law nor special circumstances can obstruct it.
accountability
The use of audit logs to monitor and track the activity of users on a system. This provides a ‘digital trail’ of all activities’ good and bad.
progressive discipline
The process of using increasingly severe measures to correct an employee’s performance issues.
constructive discharge
The principle that employers should not create hostile or intolerable work environments for employees’ such as by significantly and arbitrarily changing the conditions of employment.
defamation
The principle that both an employer and an employee have a duty to protect each others’ reputations and should not disclose false or confidential information.
hostile work environment harassment
When coworkers and/or a supervisor engage in unwelcome sexually charged behavior making the workplace atmosphere intimidating’ hostile’ or offensive.
interviews
Provide qualitative information about what an employee thinks and how they feel. Conducted with a single employee at a time.
fiduciary duty
The principle that an employee has a duty to act in the best interests of the organization.
sexual harassment
A type of employment discrimination consisting of verbal or physical abuse of a sexual nature.
quid pro quo harassment
When a person in authority’ usually a supervisor’ demands sexual favors of a subordinate as a condition of getting or keeping a job benefit.
safety incentive program
Program that rewards safety-related behaviors’ such as reporting safety violations or doing anything to improve the safety of the work environment.
risk assessment
The process of identifying variables that have the potential to negatively affect an organization’s ability to conduct business’ and quantifying those variables in financial terms.
absenteeism
When an employee regularly does not come to work.
security threat
A situation or action’ arising outside the organization’ that has the potential to disrupt the organization’s operations or business dealings’ or threaten the safety of employees.
labor union
A legally constituted group of individuals working together to achieve shared job- related goals including higher pay and shorter working hours.
surveys
A method of data collection that typically provides quantitative information about how an employee feels. These involve an employee answering a series of questions often by choosing from a number of forced-choice responses.
employee privacy policy
A written document that explains the purpose of workplace monitoring and investigations and dictates the situations in which employees can and cannot expect to enjoy privacy.
focus groups
Provide qualitative information about how employees feel or are responding to some aspect of their employment. Are conducted with a group of employees at once.
two-factor authentication
Provides added security by requiring users to have two levels of identifying aspects! something they have and something they know. Before logging into a bank account on your computer you are sent a code that you must access from your phone and enter into the website is an example.
