EMT 230 Flashcards
(20 cards)
Where do coronary arteries begin?
Just above the aortic valve
Where are coronary arteries located on the heart?
Epicardium
What are the primary coronary arteries?
Right coronary artery and left coronary artery
What branch is the circumflex artery?
Left coronary artery
What is anastomoses?
Connections, either natural or surgically created, between two structures, particularly tubular structures like blood vessels or intestines, to allow for a continuous flow or passage
If there is a coronary artery blockage, how could the muscle of the heart still receive blood?
Anastomosis
Where does the right atrium receive blood?
systemic circulation and coronary vein
What valve is between the right atrium and right ventricle?
Tricuspid valve
What valve is between the left atrium and left ventricle?
Bicuspid valve, mitral valve, AV valve
What term describes the relaxation of the heart?
Diastole
What term describes the contraction of the heart
Systole
What is stroke volume?
The volume of blood pumped out of the heart’s left ventricle during each systolic cardiac contraction
What 3 things does stroke volume depend on?
Preload, after load, and myocardial contractility
What is myocardial contractility?
The ability of the heart muscle (myocardium) to contract and pump blood effectively
What is Startling’s Law
The more stretch of the heart the more forceful contraction
Myocardial fibers contract more forcefully when they are stretched
What is the most important factor in deterring stroke volume in a healthy person?
Preload
Why is preload the most important factor in deterring stroke volume in a healthy heart?
Because it dictates the initial stretch of the heart’s muscle fibers
What does an increase in peripheral vascular resistance cause?
Decreased stroke volume
What is peripheral vascular resistance?
the resistance the heart’s pumping action has to overcome to move blood through the blood vessels in the body’s extremities, like the legs and arms
