End Of Half Term Test Flashcards
(24 cards)
What’s the function of the roots on a plant
1) absorb water and minerals
2) anchor the plant so it doesn’t fall
What’s the function of the leaf on a plant
Makes food by photosynthesis
What’s the function of the flower on a plant
Reproduction
What’s the function of the stem on a plant
1) connects the plant structures to each other
2) holds the plant up
What’s biomass
Biomass is the dry weight of a living thing. It’s what you are left with when you suck all the liquid out of it
How is the palisade cell adapted for photosynthesis
It has many Chloroplasts
Why does a leaf have veins?
Transport substances around the leaf
Why is a lead flat and broad
More light can reach the leaf as the surface area is bigger
Why is a leaf green
Because it contains chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll
Why is a leaf thin
So that light can be let through and so substances don’t have to move far
Why is a leaf waxy
There is a waxy layer on the top of the leaf to reduce water loss
Why are there many chloroplasts in a leaf?
They are needed for photosynthesis
What the function of the stomata
These little holes allow gases to move into and out of the plant
How do you know is a leaf has starch in it
- place the leaf in a water bath for 1 minute
- put the leaf at the bottom of a boiling tube filled with ethanol(ethanol will remove the chlorophyll from the leaf so it’s not green)
- stand the bowling tube in a water bath
- 5 minutes later check the leaf . If it’s not green anymore remove the leaf from the bowling tube
- rinse it under cold water and place the leaf on a white tile
- add iodine to the leaf, completely covering it
- if a blue/ black colour appears that means starch is present
Which layer contains the most chloroplasts
Palisade layer
Which layer possesses the stomata
Lower epidermis
How is starch made in a plant
Photosynthesis makes glucose, which is stored as starch
How does water enter the plant
Water enters the root hair cells by osmosis
Where does the water go after it has entered the osmosis
It travels up the xylem vessels and finally, it diffuses out of the stomata as water vapour. This is known as transpiration
Name 5 reasons plants need water
1) photosynthesis
2) opening and closing the stomata
3) to form fruits
4) to support the plant
5) to transport minerals
how is the leaf adapted for gas exchange
1) Has a stomata so carbon dioxide can go in
2) Has air spaces so gases can get around
3) Leafs are thin so gases don’t have to travel very far and they can get there fast
How does carbon dioxide enter the leaf
Enters the leaf through the stomata. It moves from an area of high concentration to low concentration. We call this diffusion
What is the word equation for respiration
Oxygen + glucose——-> carbon dioxide + water + energy
Name 3 uses of glucose
1) To release energy through respiration
2) To make cellulose to strengthen cell walls
3) To make protiens such as enzymes and chlorophyll
