End Of Year ð Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is Chemical Analysis ?
Chemical analysis is important to determine the physical and chemical properties of a substance.
Where can the information gained during analysis be used?
In a variety of areas
What are some jobs chemical analysis can be used in?
ð€Forensic science
ð€environmental scientists
ð€pharmaceutical industry
Wh
What is used in filtration?
ð€filter paper
ð€filter funnel
ð€conical flask
What is used in Evaporation?
ð€evaporation basin
ð€tripod stand
ð€bunsun burner
What is the test for chlorine?
Bleaches wet blue litmus paper
What is a flame test?
Identify the metal present in a substance.
How to identify metals ?
Using a few drops sodium hydroxide solution may form a precipitate the colour of the precipitate will identify the metal or a flame test
The test for carbonates
Adding hydrochloric acid to sample.if the product turns lime water milky the sample must be a carbonate
Turns limewater milky
What is the test for sulfates/sulfites
Adding barium cloride to a sample if white precipitate is formed the sample must be a sulfate/sulfite
Test for halides
They can be identified by adding silver nitrate to the sample the precipitate collurs are
White indicates chloride
Cream indicates bromide
Pale yellow indicates iodine
What is Chromatography?
Is it used to separate small amounts of soluble substances.
How to find an Rf value
Rf value = distance traveled by substance (divided)/ distance travelled by solvent
What can chromatography be used for?
Compares the distance travelled by the spots to reference substances which allows us to identify the components of the mixture
Test for metals?
Identifying the metal by its colour
Test for metal
Add sodium hydroxide and observe the colour of the precipitate
The test for hydrogen?
Burns with a squeaky pop
Test for oxygen.
Relights a glowing splint
Test for carbon dioxide ?
Turns limewater milky
Test for chlorine?
Bleaches blue litmus paper
Test for carbonates?
When added to acid the gas produced turns lime water milky
Test for sulfates/sulfites?
When added to barium chloride a precipitate is formed
What is the test for halides ?
When added to silver nitrate a precipitate is formed
