End of Year - Reproduction Flashcars | 2023 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is the definition of reproduction?
The production of offspring
How many organsims are required to take part in sexual reproduction?
Two: A male and female.
Explain the process of sexual reproduction
Gametes (sperm and eggs/ovum) from both the male and female reproductive organs are released during sex. These gametes then fuse during fertilisation to make a zygote. The zygote then divides several times to create an organism.
What is asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproducion is the production of offspring from a single organism in which the product is genetically identical to its parent.
How many organsims are required to go thtough asexual reproduction
One organism
Explain the process of asexual reproduction
Cells in one part of the body divide by mitosis and form a structure that breaks away from the parent body and grows into a new organism.
Explain some of the differences between asexual and sexual reproduction/offspring
Sexual - Requires to organisms (m & f)
Offspring are not genetically identical and so allows
variation as well as adaptability.
Asexual - Only requires one organism to reproduce
offspring is identical to its parent
