what is the Magna Charter?
And why was it created
The Magna Carta (Latin for “Great Charter”) is a historic document signed in 1215 in England. It was created to limit the power of the king and protect certain rights of the people.
Different types of courts- in order of power
LEAST: magistrate court, crown court, court of appeal, supreme court
what happens in a magistrate court?
They deal with majority or criminal offenses
Verdicts and sentencing decisions by three magistrates
what happens in a Crown court?
They have a jury and judge
Deals with more serious offences
What happens in a court of appeal
Hears appeals against the convictions/ sentences handed by the crown court
what happens in a supreme court?
hears appeals against the rulings of the court of appeal
What is mediation?
A method of dispute resolution for civil disputes where the mediator gives each part a reasonable opportunity to explain the side of the dispute for them
What is the role of mediators?
give at least 2 examples
-Makes sure that both parties are given a reasonable opportunity to explain their side of the dispute to the other party
-Does not make suggestions to help resolve the dispute
-Does not decide the dispute- the parties have to try and come up with a solution

What does a solicitor do
A solicitor provides legal advice to their clients
What work do solicitors do
Their work can cover a range of legal practise areas from: criminal, family law, corporate or commercial law.
What does a barrister do
A barrister will represent their client in court
What work does a barrister do
will use legal work carried out by a solicitor to prepare for a trial or hearing
Name any crossovers between the role of a solicitor and a barrister
-solicitors may be able to represent their clients if granted “ rights of audience”
-Barristers can work at much higher level of courts than solicitors
