Q

what is the structure of district 9?

A
  • both circular and open structure
  • circular structure because it begins and ends with aliens being oppressed while MNU remain in power
  • open structure because there is no sequel resolving the storyline, which leaves audiences wondering whether wikus fully transformed into an alien and whether chrisopher ever came back to save them

Q

what do audiences feel towards the aliens by the end of the film?

A
  • sympathy and relief
  • feel sympathy because we know about the horrible treatment of the aliens by the MNU
  • feel relief because christopher managed to escape, which gives us hope that he will return and save the rest of the aliens
  • this contrasts the beginning of the film, where our sympathies were with the humans as we were shown dirty, criminal aliens. this changed because we learnt more about the situation

Q

what do audiences feel towards humans by the end of the film?

A
  • disappointed and angry because they are shown as terrorising monsters who feel the need to control everyone and everything through the means of violence
  • this has changed from the beginning of the film, where we felt sympathetic towards humans because we can relate to them the most and we are seeing things from their POV

Q

has wikkus changed by the end of the film?

A
  • personally he has not changed to me
  • he only does things for personal gain - such as helping christopher get to the ship. he knows that if at least christoper could get home, he could make a cure that would turn him back into a human.
  • if he hadn’t of spilt the alien fluid all over himself, he would’ve stayed xenophobic and continued to work for the MNU and contribute to the oppression of aliens.

Q

CONCLUSION: is conflict destructive or necessary?

A
  • destructive because it causes pain, suffering, tears countries apart and ruins lives on innocent people.
  • it is also necessary because without conflict it would be harder to identify what’s wrong in the world. this is because is no one fought for what they believe is right, there would be no change and no awareness of what we could do to improve.
