Endocrine Flashcards
(38 cards)
Where do glucocorticoids and ACTH ACT?
Zona Fasciculata and Zona reticularis
Where do mineralcorticoids and angiotension act?
Zona Gomerulosa
Where do most ACTH secreting tumors in dogs arise from?
Zona Fasciculata
In cushings disease what happens to the other adrenal gland?
It will have cortical atrophy due to negative feedback mechanism.
What is the pathognomonic sign in cushings disease?
Calcinosis cutis
What are some things you see with excess cortisol production?
Calcinosis cutis Hepatomegaly- steroid hepatopathy Hypertension Immunosupression-pyoderma, stinky Poor healing muscle atrophy Pu/Pd
What causes a pot belly?
Muscle atrophy, fat redistribution, hepatomegaly
Do all adrenal tumors cause cushings disease?
No , only functional tumors
What is Conns syndrome and what species is it seen in?
Cats It is hyperaldosteronism caused by the zona glomerulosa
In ferrets what will adrenal tumors secrete?
Ferrets have hyper estorgenism secreting Androgens not Cortisol
Clinical signs seen in ferrerts with hyper estrogenism ?
Vulvular enlargement, anemia, endometrial hyperplasia, Pu/Pd , alopecia
What is this an example of?

Adrenocortical adenoma/ adrenocarcinoma
What is going on here and what is it caused by?

Bilateral adrenocortical hypertrophy/hyperplasia, which is caused by a pitutary adenoma
What would a pitutary adenoma be secreting?
ACTH
Are these functioning adrenal tumors?

No these are nodular , this is indicative of senile change and can be from old age. This is NOT productive
In horses what is cushing disease caused by?
Pituitary adenomas are from pars intermedia
Why are clinical signs in the horse different from the dog?
Because in the horse clinical signs are not a result of ACTH secretion generally it is from compression of the hypothalmus which causes clinical signs
True or false in horses with pars intermedia you will see adrenocortical hyperplasia?
False NO adrenaocortical hyperplasia
What is going on here and what does this result in?

rathkes pouch pituitary cyst resulting in pituitary dwarfism
What disease will be seen in primary bilateral adrenocortical atrophy?
Hypoadrenocorticism- Addisons disease
What type of tumor is this and where does it orginate from?

Pheochromocytoma which is a neuroendocrine tumor of the adrenal medulla
What is happening in this picutre and what disease might be seen?

Adrenocortical atrophy, addisons
This goat has this disease______which is know as thyroid______.

Goiter, thyroid hyperplasia
True or false in goiter animals are hyperthyroid?
False hypo or euthyroid
