Q

What is the function of the liver in blood glucose?

A

Storage site where glucose molecules are linked to one another to form glycogen. And then the glycogen can be split into small glucose molecules to be sent to the cells.

16
Q

Why are ketones present in unmanaged diabetes mellitus?

A

Fats are used since glucose cannot get into the body’s cells with lack of insulin or broken receptors that insulin binds to.

17
Q

Ketoacidosis is the presence of ketones and acids produced in severe cases of unmanaged diabetes.
What can the presence of wastes and acids cause?

A

Diabetic coma.

18
Q

What is the etiology (cause) of Type 1 diabetes?

A

Autoimmune disorder where beta cells are destroyed.

19
Q

What is the etiology (cause) of Type 2 diabetes?

A

It is thought that the receptors that insulin binds to are damaged from overuse. So insulin is usually normal or slightly low but it cannot bind to receptors so glucose cannot enter the cell.

20
Q

What type of diffusion allows the carrier protein to bind to insulin, then change shape to transport glucose into the cell.

A

Facilitated diffusion, which is a passive transport.

21
Q

What gland needs iodine to function properly?

A

Thyroid gland
