Endocrine System Flashcards
(29 cards)
What hormone is responsible for promoting proper growth?
Growth hormone (HGH or somatropin)
Most body cells, especially bones, are the target cells for growth hormone.
What does Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) stimulate?
Stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine
Thyroxine regulates metabolism.
What is the function of Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in females?
Stimulates follicle development in ovaries
In males, it stimulates sperm development.
What does FSH do to males?
Stimulates sperm developement
What is the role of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) in females?
Stimulates ovulation and formation of the corpus luteum
In males, it stimulates testosterone production.
What does LH do in males?
In males, LH stimulates the production of the sex hormone, testosterone.
What does Prolactin do?
Stimulates and maintains milk production
It is secreted only when a female is lactating.
What is the function of Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)?
Stimulates the outer adrenal cortex of the adrenal glands to secrete its hormones
The target is the adrenal cortex.
What hormone initiates strong uterine contractions during labor?
Oxytocin
It also triggers milk release in lactating females.
What does Oxytocin do?
In males, LH stimulates the production of the sex hormone, testosterone.
What 6 Hormones are secreted by Anterior pituitary?
ACTH, Prolactin, LH, FSH, TSH, Growth
What does Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) regulate?
Helps regulate water balance by stimulating the reabsorption of water by the kidneys
It also helps to regulate blood pressure.
What 2 Hormones is Posterior Pituitary responsible for?
Oxytocin, ADH
What is Parathyroid hormone (PTH) responsible for?
Causes calcium to be released into the blood
It acts on kidneys, intestines, and bones.
What is the function of Calcitonin?
Responsible for lowering blood calcium levels
It stimulates the bones to absorb calcium.
What does Thyroxine control?
Responsible for controlling metabolism
High levels lead to higher metabolism.
What 2 Hormones is the Thyroid responsible for?
Thyroxine. Calcitonin
What is the role of Insulin?
Lowers blood sugar level
It makes cells more permeable to glucose for conversion to glycogen.
What does Glucagon do?
Causes an increase in blood sugar levels
It promotes the conversion of glycogen back into glucose.
What is the major male sex hormone produced by the testes?
Testosterone
Responsible for maturation of sperm and development of secondary male sexual characteristics.
What does Estrogen do in the female reproductive system?
Increases thickening of the uterine lining (endometrium)
It activates the development of female secondary sex characteristics.
What is the function of Progesterone?
Maintains the uterine lining/endometrium during pregnancy
It is secreted by the ovaries.
Ovaries secrete?
Estrogen and progesterone
What does Adrenaline (Epinephrine) do?
Raises blood glucose levels for short term stress response
Target cells include heart, muscle, and liver.
