Endocrine System Flashcards
(15 cards)
What does the thyroid gland do?
It secretes thyroxine which regulates your metabolism rates. Too much causes hyperactivity and too little causes weight gain and sluggishness
What does the adrenal gland do?
They produce the hormone adrenaline which causes the fight or flight response
What do the ovaries do?
They secrete a hormone called oestrogen which controls the development of girls secondary sexual characteristics, and progesterone which thickens the uterine wall and prevents contractions until a baby is being born
What doe the testes do?
They produce a hormone called testosterone which controls the development of boys secondary sexual characteristics
What does the pancreas do?
It produces a hormone called insulin, which controls the conversion of blood glucose to insoluble glycogen, which is stored in the liver, and the hormone glucagon, which controls the conversion of insoluble glycogen to glucose in the liver
What does the pituitary gland do?
It produces several hormones including the growth hormone(bone and muscular growth), antidiuretic hormone(ADH)(controls reabsorption of water into the blood by kidneys), thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)(controls the endocrine function of the thyroid gland), and produces follicle stimulating hormone(FSH)(causes the ovary to start producing oestrogen), and lutinizing hormone(LH)(causes ovulation) in females. It sends signals to the other endocrine glands
What role does the hypothalamus play in the endocrine system?
It regulates homeostasis by checking the internal environment
What is the process of hormone production called?
Negative feedback
What is an example of a negative feedback loop?
- Hypothalamus senses that blood glucose levels are too high->pancreas releases insulin-> insulin stimulates liver to take the glucose and store it a glycogen->blood glucose levels decrease
- Hypothalamus senses that blood glucose levels are too low-> pancreas releases glucagon->liver breaks down glycogen and releases glucose-> blood glucose levels rise
What is a type of endocrine disorder
Diabetes. Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce or not recognise insulin
What is diabetes caused by?
When the body does not produce enough insulin or when the body’s cells become resistant to insulin
What are symptoms of diabetes
There aren’t many symptoms of diabetes, but when they do occur, they can include increased thirst/urination, fatigue, weight loss, or blurred vision
How does diabetes disrupt homeostasis?
It interrupts the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose levels, primarily due to issues with insulin production or action
What is an example of a feedback loop
Stimulus(detects change)-> receptor(processes the change)-> effector(responds to stimulus)-> response(changed by effector)-> feedback(change detected)
What is a feedback loop
The process where a change to the system results in an alarm that triggers a certain result
