Energy Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is the definition of energy?
The ability to do work
What is energy measured in?
Joules
What is Kinetic energy
Moving things have this
What is Heat energy also known as?
Thermal energy
How is sound energy produced?
Produced by vibrations, like a guitar string
How is magnetic energy produced?
Produced by a magnet or electromagnet
How is light energy produced?
Produced by sun, bulbs or fire
Where is chemical energy stored?
Stored in all fuels, food and batteries
How is electrical energy produced?
Produced when an electric current flows.
Where is nuclear energy stored?
In nuclear fuels e.g. uranium
Where is elastic potential energy stored?
In things that are stretched or compressed
Where is gravitational potential energy stored?
- In things that are lifted up off the ground.
- The higher the are the more gravitational energy they have.
What is the Law of conservation of energy?
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another.
What forms of energy are often thought of as wasted energy?
Heat and sound.
What does kinetic energy depend on?
Mass and speed
What does gravitational potential energy depend on?
Mass and height
What is the formula for kinetic energy
KE = œmv²
KE - kinetic energy in Joules (J)
m - mass in kg
v - velocity in m/s
What is the formula for potential energy?
- PE = mgh
- PE - potential energy in Joules (J)
- m - mass in kg
- g - acceleartion due to gravity = 10m/s
- h - height in m
What is the link between kinetic energy and potential energy
KE at the bottom of eg a cliff = PE at the top if eg a cliff
What are the 3 problems with fossil fuels?
- Non-renewable: Once they are used up they can not be replaced easily or quickly
- Produce carbon dioxide when burnt contributing to global warming
- Release other pollutants e.g. sulphur dioxide gas which causes acid rain.
What are fossil fuels?
Include coal, oil, gas and lignite. Used to heat homes, cook food, fuel transport and generate electricity
Name 5 sources of renewable energy
- Wind
- Water
- Geothermal (energy from the ground)
- Solar
- Biomass (energy from animal or plant material)
How does wind energy work?
Wind turns a wind turbine which generates electricity.
What are the advantages for wind energy?
- Renewable energy source
- Does not release harmful gases
- No fuel costs
