Energy Flashcards
study (22 cards)
What is Energy?
Energy is the ability to do work.
Why do we need energy?
To move, grow, and carry out daily activities.
What is Kinetic Energy? Give an example.
Kinetic Energy is energy of motion. Example: A moving car, rolling ball.
What is Potential Energy? Give an example.
Potential Energy is stored energy. Example: Stretched rubber band, water behind a dam.
What is Light Energy? Give an example.
Light Energy is energy from light. Example: Sunlight, light bulb.
What is Heat (Thermal) Energy? Give an example.
Heat Energy is energy that increases temperature. Example: Fire, hot tea.
What is Sound Energy? Give an example.
Sound Energy is energy of sound waves. Example: Music, ringing bell.
What is Electrical Energy? Give an example.
Electrical Energy is energy from electric charge. Example: Battery, lightning, electricity powering appliances.
What is Chemical Energy? Give an example.
Chemical Energy is energy stored in chemical bonds. Example: Food, fuel, batteries.
What is the principle of Energy Conversion?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change from one form to another.
Provide an example of energy conversion involving a battery.
Chemical energy → Electrical energy → Light (in torchlight).
Provide an example of energy conversion involving a toaster.
Electrical energy → Heat energy.
Provide an example of energy conversion involving a microphone.
Sound energy → Electrical energy.
Provide an example of energy conversion involving a fan.
Electrical energy → Kinetic energy (moving fan blades).
What is useful energy?
The form we want (e.g., light from a bulb).
What is wasted energy?
Energy we don’t want (e.g., heat from the bulb).
In a radio, what is the useful energy and what is the wasted energy?
Useful energy = sound; wasted energy = heat.
What type of energy does food contain?
Chemical energy.
List three uses of energy in the body.
- Move (kinetic energy) * Keep warm (heat energy) * Think and grow.
Why should we conserve energy?
Energy is precious.
Name two ways to conserve energy.
- Switch off lights when not in use * Use energy-efficient appliances.
Fill in the blank: We should walk or cycle instead of using _______.
cars.
