Energy Flashcards
(18 cards)
Chemical potential energy
Energy stored as chemicals waiting to react
Internal or thermal energy
Energy stored in movement slash vibration of particles
Gravitational potential energy or gpe
Energy stored in objects raised up
Kinetic energy
Energy stored in objects that move
Elastic potential energy
Energy stores in an object that have been stretched or compressed
How does internal thermal energy increase
Increases with Temperature
How does kinetic energy increase
Increases with speed
How does gravitational potential energy increase
Increases with height
How does elastic potential energy increase
Increases with extension
Cost of using an appliance
Cost equals power in kilowatts X time in hours X price per kilowatt hrs
How does the power station work
Fossil fuels burn to heat the water and produce a steam steam drives a turbine turbine drives a generator this provides the push that means a current flows in a kettle in your home
However in nuclear power stations
Heat is generated by splitting atoms rather than burning fuel
Conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed only transferred
Energy dissipation
The spreading out of energy until it is no longer useful this tends to be in a form of heat energy
Fossil fuels
Cold oil and natural gas four millions of years ago from the fossilised remains of sea creatures and trees
Non renewable
They could not be replenished in our lifetime
Renewable
Can be replenished in our lifetime
Unreliable
Depends on the weather
