Energy Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is a system?
An object or group of objects.
What is kinetic energy?
The energy stored in moving objects.
What objects do not have kinetic energy?
Stationary objects.
What is elastic potential energy?
Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in an object when it is stretched or compressed, like a spring
What is meant be extensions in terms of springs?
The distance of the stretch made by the force applied on the spring.
What happens when we apply to greater force on a spring?
The extension is no longer directly proportional to the force as the spring is stretched beyond the limit of proportionality.
What is the outcome for the spring after it has stretched beyond its limit of proportionality?
It will no return back to its original length.
What is the gravitational protentional energy?
The energy stored in a object due to its position above the earth surface.
Why type of force is acting on the object during gravitational protentional energy?
Gravity.
What is specific heat capacity?
Specific heat capacity is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1°C.
What does “Δ” mean?
Change in
What is thermal energy?
The energy stored in an object due to an object temperature.
What is the law conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred, stored, or dissipated.
What is a closed system?
Where energy can not enter or leave.
What does friction cause energy to do?
Cause energy to be transferred to thermal energy.
Where is friction in a pendulum?
The pendulum passing through the air particles.
What does it mean when energy is dissipated?
Wasted
Why do Pendulum stop moving at some point?
The friction from the air to the pendulum is dissipated and cause it to swing with less energy eventually stopping it.
How can we reduce unwanted energy transfer?
Reduce friction: -use lubricant on fix point
-remove air particles around the pendulum
-use of thermal insulation
What is work done?
whenever energy is transferred from one store to another.
What does mechanical work involve?
Involves a force to move an object.
What does electrical work involve?
Involves a current transferring energy.
What is power?
Power is how quickly (the rate) energy is transferred or work is done.
What is the unit for power?
1 Watt (W)
