energy Flashcards
(14 cards)
what is a fuel
somethng that is burnt to release energy
name some energy sources
oil, gas, coal, biomass, food, wind, waves , batteries, geothermal, hydroeletric, solar
differences between renewable and non-renewable energy sources
renewable - can be replenished within a lifetime, e.g. solar
non renewable - cannot be replensihed within a liftime and will eventually be used up r.g. oil, gas, coal
what are the advantages of using non-renewable energy sources
they release allot of energy, reliable, high energy dense
what are the disadvantages of using non-renewable energy sources
the will one day run out, they release carbon dioxide which leads to global warming and acid rain
what are the advantages of using renewable energy sources
they do not produce carbon dioxide and there is a constant and infinite supply
what are the disadvantages of using renewable energy sources
they are not reliable, they do not produe as much energy as non-renewable
what is energy measured in
joules, kilojoules
name the 8 forms of energy
chemical - batteries, food
eletrical - battery
gravitational potential - objects at height
kinetic - a moving car
light - a torch
sound - a radio, a hairdryer
elastic potential - a tight elastic band
thermal - fire, a cup of tea
descrie the energy transformation when you switch on a lamp
eletrical energy is transferred into light energy (useful) and thermal energy (waste)
describe the energy transformation when you use a vacuum
eletrical energy is transferred into kinetic energy (useful) and sound energy (wasted)
name and give descriptions of the 5 main contact forces
friction - force that prevents objects moving or slows them down when moving
drag - caused by friction from air
upthrust - is produced by water pushing upwards on an object
surface tension - this helps raindrops keep their shape and allows some insects to move on waters surface
reaction force - the force acting in the opposite direction
name and give descriptions of the 3 main non-contact forces
gravity - this is the force that pulls objects down to the centre of the planet and which gives them weight. gravity us present between any two objects.
magnetic force - the force produced by a magnet that affects magnetic materials such as iron. usually only works over a short distance
electric force - from static electricity that can attract objects. this also tends to act over a short distance
formula triangle for distance
distance = speed x time
