energy 2 Flashcards
(31 cards)
What provides most of Alberta’s electricity?
Fossil fuels, especially coal (54%).
How are fossil fuels formed?
From ancient plants and animals buried without oxygen, compacted over time with heat and pressure.
How is energy released from fossil fuels?
Through combustion, producing CO₂ and water.
What gases cause global warming?
CO₂ (from burning fossil fuels) and CH₄ (from cattle, waste, oil & gas)
Effects of global warming?
Higher temperatures, melting glaciers, flooding, weather changes, species extinction.
Solutions to reduce global warming?
Drive less, replant trees, use clean energy, capture carbon.
What is the heat of reaction?
Energy change in a chemical reaction (ΔrH).
Difference between exothermic and endothermic?
Exothermic releases heat (ΔrH negative); endothermic absorbs heat (ΔrH positive).
Steps in a coal-fired plant?
Burn coal → heat water → steam spins turbine → generator makes electricity
Advantages of coal?
Cheap, available, high energy, reliable.
Disadvantages of coal?
Nonrenewable, pollutes air sulfurx, CO₂, mercury), environmental damage.
What is reclamation?
Restoring land after mining to usable condition.
Renewable energy sources?
Solar, wind, water, tidal, geothermal, biomass
Non-renewable energy sources?
Coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear
What is ozone depletion
Damage to ozone layer by CFCs, allowing UV rays to reach Earth.
What are ionizing vs non-ionizing radiation?
Ionizing (gamma, alpha, beta) can damage cells; non-ionizing (radio, microwave) can’t.
What happens to unstable isotopes?
They decay, releasing energy and forming new atoms.
What is nuclear fusion?
Atoms combine to release energy (in stars). Not yet usable on Earth
What is nuclear fission?
A large atom (like uranium) splits and releases energy
What is a CANDU reactor?
A Canadian nuclear reactor using uranium and heavy water.
What does CO₂ and CH₄ cause?
Global warming.
What is geothermal energy?
Heat from Earth’s core, used to generate electricity.
What do NOx and SOx cause?
Acid deposition (acid rain).
How is tidal energy used?
Moving tides (caused by moon) turn turbines to make electricity
