Energy Flashcards
(27 cards)
What percent of energy use is from fossil fuels? Renewables?
80%
17%
Which countries have the highest oil reserves
Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Canada
Who has the highest oil production?
Saudi Arabia, US, Russia
Who has the most natural gas?
Russia, Iran, Qatar
Who produces the most natural gas?
US, Russia by far
Who has the most coal?
US, Russia, China
Who produces the most coal?
China, US.
How many years of each fossil fuel do we have left at current production rates?
50 years if oil, 60 years of gas, 200 years of coal
How is most energy wasted?
Through hot water.
How is Denmark more energy efficient?
Hot water byproduct is used to heat homes, factories, offices. They have district hot water boilers.
What are hurdles to renewable energy?
The cost is very high compared to fossil fuels because lack of effort to finance subsidies and development
The supply isn’t reliable - it’s not always windy, sunnny, etc.
Where is Hydro Power a major power source?
China, Brazil, Canada, and Norway.
What percent of global electricity is produced by hydro dams?
20%
What are the effects of dams?
They control flooding, use less fossil fuels
Gases given off by rotting vegetation in reservoirs.
Sediment flow is stopped
Pollution can build up
Loss of habitat and agricultural land
How quickly is wind power growing?
30% per year
How much of the world’s energy could wind supply?
20%
Benefits of wind?
Cheap to produce, no emissions, little noise, can be used in combination with other things, like on farm land.
Negatives of wind power?
Bird deaths, interfere with electronics, Ugly as fuck.
Who is the leader in wind power and how much do they produce?
Denmark, 25% of their electric power
What share does wind make up in Canada?
2.3%, growing 30% a year. Mostly in Ontario and Quebec
Benefits of solar
Costs decreasing rapidly, no pollution or noise, no water, little maintenance, can be used remotely, can operate on small-large scales, portable, little land required
What are sources of biomass energy?
wood, straw, vegetation, dung, crop waste, charcoal, landfill gas, logging waste.
How much does biomass contribute to world energy?
10% 2.5 billion people main source in developing world.
Who are the biggest producers of biofuel crops?
U.S. and Brazil. Canada #5
