Energy Flashcards
(25 cards)
Define energy
Can cause an object to change, move, or work
Define potential energy
Stored energy
Define Kinetic energy
Energy in motion
Define gravitational potential energy
Energy based on position above the earth
Define chemical energy
Energy stored in the bonds of atoms like food and the fuel in a car
Define thermal energy
Energy that is transferred from hot to cold
Define conduction
It is a transfer of energy through direct contact
Define conductors
Materials that allow energy transfer like any metal
Define insulators
Materials that slow down energy transfer like wood, wool, rubber
Define energy transfer
When energy moves from one place to another
Define energy transformation
When energy changes from one type to another
Define law conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed but I can change from one form to another
Define efficiency
How well something works
What combination of tube height and type of Rod transfers the most energy?
The long steel and long tube have high mass and high height which will transfer the most energy explain with evidence.
Is all the energy transferred in the nail, explain?
No the gravitational potential energy is transferred into kinetic energy, the rod is in motion and hits the nail. Sound energy, you can hear the Rod hit the nail. Thermal energy, direct contact can feel the warmth of the nail.
Where is the most gravitational potential energy on a roller coaster?
At the highest point since it is the highest off the ground.
Where is the most kinetic energy on a roller coaster?
At the lowest point after a high point because this is where all the gravitational potential energy is transferred.
Is the roller coaster going faster at point E or F?
E because the roller coaster is traveling faster in E then F since it just came down from a hill.
Why can’t a roller coaster go up a hill that is higher than the hill it just came down?
The roller coaster is a losing energy throughout the whole ride so it doesn’t have enough energy to go up a higher hell of an already did.
What type of energy transformation takes place when you plug in the TV and turn it on
It starts with the electric energy and is transferred into sound light and thermal energy.
When you open a refrigerator what happens
Thermal energy outside of the fridge is transferred into the fridge.
What units are used to measure energy?
calories-with a little c
If a gas motor has a 40% efficiency what does that mean?
The car uses 40% energy stored in the gas for motion and the other 60% is lost two other factors like heat/thermal energy.
What are the different types of renewable Energy sources?
Biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, title, wind, and is unlimited.
