Energy Flashcards

1
Q

Thermal Energy

A

energy that is generated and measured by heat. An example of thermal energy is the kinetic energy of an atom. An example of thermal energy is the chemical energy in a molecule.

Q

Conduction

A

Heat spontaneously flows from a hotter to a colder body. For example, heat is conducted from hot sand to the bottom of a person’s feet. Transfer is through touch.

Q

Convection

A

Transfer through fluid. Movement caused within a fluid by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the influence of gravity, which consequently results in transfer of heat.

Q

Radiation

A

Radiation is a method of heat transfer that does not rely upon any contact between the heat source and the heated object. … The energy lost is emitted as light or electromagnetic radiation. Example: heat from the sun

Q

Kinetic Energy examples

A

When you let go of that ball and let it fall, the potential energy converts into kinetic energy, or the energy associated with motion. There are five types of kinetic energy: radiant, thermal, sound, electrical and mechanical.

Q

Potential Energy

A

the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position relative to others, stresses within itself, electric charge, and other factors.

Q

Chemical Energy

A

Chemical energy is stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules – it is the energy that holds these particles together. Stored chemical energy is found in food, biomass, petroleum, and natural gas.

Q

Nuclear Energy

A

Nuclear energy is stored in the nucleus of atoms. This energy is released when the nuclei are combined (fusion) or split apart (fission). Nuclear power plants split the nuclei of uranium atoms to produce electricity.

Q

Electrical Energy

A

Electrical energy is the movement of electrons (the tiny particles that make up atoms, along with protons and neutrons). Electrons that move through a wire are called electricity. Lightning is another example of electrical energy.

Q

What are the two main types of energy?

A

Kinetic and Potential (sometimes referred to as gravitational potential). Energy can never be created or destroyed, but it can be transformed from one type of energy to another.
