Q

List seven energy stores

A

Energy stores

  1. Gravitational potential energy store - height
  2. Chemical energy store - food, fuel & battery
  3. Kinetic energy store - movement
  4. Elastic energy store - strteched rubber bands and springs
  5. Magnetic energy store - two magnets attract or repel each other
  6. Electrostatic energy store - two electric charges attract or repel each other
  7. Thermal energy store - hot & high temperature

Q

List four types of energy transfer

A

Types of energy transfer

  1. Mechanically - force - move object pushed, pulled, stretched or dquashed
  2. By heating - hotter objects to colder objects
  3. Electrically - electric charges move in a electric circuit
  4. By light and sound waves

Q

When a forec moves an object through a distance, energy is transferred

Energy transferred = ?

A

Energy transferred = Force X Distance

(in jules J) (in newtons N) (metres M)

E.g. Force = 340N

Distance = 5M

Energy transferred = 340 X 5 = 1700 J

Q

What is thermal equilibrium?

A

When there’s a temperature difference between two objects, energy will be transferred from the hotter one to the cooler one (so the hotter object will cool down and the cooler object will heat up) until the objects reach thermal equilibrium — the point at which they’re both the same temperature.
