energy,carbohydrated and plant products Flashcards
(28 cards)
what is a carbohydrate?
A carbohydrate is a compound containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen with the hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio 2:1
what is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process whereby plants make food using the Sun’s energy.
what are two of the many uses of plants?
fuel and food
what is the most common food type we get from plants?
carbohydrates
what is glucose?
a simple carbohydrate
what is glucoses formula?
C6H12O6
what is starch?
Starch is a very long molecule made from thousands of small glucose molecules joining together.
how can we test for glucose?
by using benedicts solution
how do we know if glucose is present?
if the solution goes from blue to orange
how can we test for starch?
by using iodine solution
how do we know if starch is present?
if the solution goes from orange to blue-black
how is starch broken down in the body?
Starch is broken down into glucose in our body by an enzyme during the process called digestion.
what is an enzyme?
a biological catalyst
why is starch broken down into smaller molecules?
it is too big to pass through the gut wall and then into the bloodstream
what is respiration?
Respiration is the process whereby we obtain energy from our food.
what is the word equation for respiration?
carbohydrate + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy
how can glucose be converted into alcohol?
Glucose can be converted into alcohol in a process called fermentation.
what is the alcohol produced during fermentation?
ethanol
what is the word equation for fermentation?
Glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide
what percent of alcohol can fermentation make in drinks?
up to 15%-things like beer,wine,lager,cider
how are drinks with a higher alcohol percent made after fermentation?
distilation
what types of drinks have to be distilled?
whisky,vodka and gin
what is the boiling point of ethanol?
79 degrees
what is the boiling point of water?
100 degrees
